To make this explanation more visual and, hopefully, comprehensible (not the usual rant) I'll use this convention for words that can be both nouns and verbs, punctuation and the rest (words whose meaning can be unambiguous):

• nouns in bold green:                                                 e.g: darkness
• verbs in bold pink:                                                    e.g:   shed
• (implied) punctuation in bold red:                             e.g:    , ; .

• all the rest (articles, prepositions, adjectives, pronouns):  as usual

So,
Version #1:

In the darkness, lies 
light the truth: shed on our lives,

Version #2:
